When the historians reference the primary sources (at least the of the Early Christian Church and Roman Catholic Church), you are likely to be able to look them up in Denzinger! To really make it pop, have Denzinger next to you while reading "The Christian Tradition," by Jaroslav Pelikan, "2,000 Years of Christ's Power," by Nicholas Needham, "The History of the Christian Church," by Philip Schaff, etc. One should read it with a critical lexicon to make it pop. This edition is fantastic, as it contains the original language and the English side-by-side.
